From the Great Bridge Lock to the Norfolk Naval Station, the importance of the Elizabeth River is ever-present in our everyday lives. The Elizabeth River is a vital, important body of water. The fact that the history of the nation is tied so closely to the history of the Elizabeth River holds true. Andrew Sprowle’s private shipyard has become the oldest, largest and best naval shipyard in the United States—Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Sewell’s Point, the land first purchased back in 1620, has become the site of the world’s largest naval base. Hospital Point is the site of the oldest naval hospital. Aside from the military buildup that has taken place along its banks, the river’s port facilities have been developed, with terminals on all sides of the river, including the largest coal facility in the world. But the condition of the Elizabeth suffered over time and its health has been a wake-up call that rivers that are the lifeblood of our nation which must be saved. This definitive history concerns itself with the efforts to restore the Elizabeth River and preserve its history.
